Plain Float Finish
A plain float finish is commonly finished with a masonry paint for extra protection against the weather. In cold months, it takes a lot of time waiting for render to set and being able to achieve the finish, but this kind of finish is normally used in areas that are covered. Window reveals, plinths and decorative bands around door and window openings can be finished in the same way.
A fault that is commonly found with a plain float render finish is cracking on the surface. Cracking can be caused by suction in the background or scouring the surface too much.
Modern renders are pre-mixed and already has additives and other necessary materials so it is less likely to get faults such as cracks and irregular colours that you would get in traditional renders due to poor gauging.
Modern renders can be applied with a machine that can mix, pump and spray the material onto the background. The plasterer will still need to use traditional methods to get the perfect finish.
Hydraulic lime renders are used mainly on old buildings that have been built using lime mortar. Hydraulic lime renders do not need additives or plasticiser added to the mix.
