Rendering Sand

Sand is the majority of the render mixture. For external rendering, pit sand, dredged sand from the river bed and artificial sand can be used.
Modern render mixes are made using artificial sand. Artificial sand is made by crushing stone and comes in different colours.
Poor quality sand will create faults in the render such as cracks and it can become loose or crumble.
The sand should have been washed to get rid of any impurities. Clay and silt are also added into the mix.
